This channel covers topics related to creating things. Whether its techniques to create things or things that we have created. Its supposed to be informative and fun. We use multiple open source software and hardware solutions to create things that we find interesting. The main software we use, FreeCAD, Blender, InkScape, Gimp, F-Engrave, OctoPrint, Marlin Firmware. The hardware we use for CNC routing is the excellent Mostly Printed CNC from V1 Engineering. - Please feel free to leave comments and suggestions if you have ideas or suggestions on topics we could cover.

I guess you could have offset to the top of the cylinder for the second item instead of reversing the cylinder also…
I couldn't find 1.0 anywhere for download in the US. Is that pending for us? It looks like they've made some fantastic improvements!
1.0 is not released yet, the dev version 0.22Dev is the feature freeze for 1.0 - Download that and you have everything that will be in 1.0
please what macros did you use
Do you mean the start up Macro? If I used that it just creates a part, body and starts a sketch. You can do that manually.
Excellent walk through of the new sketcher features. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
thanks ❤
You're welcome!
I have hundreds of files created in older versions of FreeCad such 0.20. Will I be able to open and work on these files in 1.0?
Should be able to bring them in no problem just if you try using any of the new features the files will be converted to only work with new version so might want to work from copy instead of original just in case something breaks.😉
Yes, you can open older files but, you can't go backwards. Once you work on them in the newer version you won't be able to work on them in the older version.
Spot on!
👏👏👏
:-)
New function features are fantastic. Navigating the new toolbars is a challenge, but just muscle memory to train. Multiple solids in one body should help reduce steps. And of course, solving the auto correction parametric sequencing issue is awesome. Thanks for sharing your research with us. Well appreciated.
It's great stuff, does take a little bit of getting used to but I just went back to the current version for something today and it's surprising how quickly you switch. I missed all the new features.
Can you send the multiple solids (in one body) to the CAM bench to then machine - lase - plasma - cut - etc. ?
Good questions, I haven't tried that yet but I am working on finishing my enclosure for my CNC router, once that is done, I expect to putting the CAM workbench through it's paces and will definitely try the multiple solids in there too.
Very Handy Tips, from someone well versed in other Design Software Packages and couldn't wait until FreeCAD started offering the real time saver features! All of "Us Newbies" haven't even noticed what we were missing, right? Have you used the new Assembly WB included in 0.22 yet? I need someone good with how to use all the different "Joints" offered and explain the do's and don't... Thanks G_Dub
Thanks G_Dub, I have used the assembly workbench. I have to admit it's not as intuitive as I had hoped but it's a step in the right direction. I will be creating a video on that too.
Time for me to upgrade. As a novice these new features are life changing!
I agree, as long as you don't want to go back.
@@Adventuresincreation nope. I’ve only ever used 0.21 and the things added/fixed in 0.22 are basically all things I struggled with being a first time user to CAD. My needs are basic enough I don’t lose anything committing myself to the bleeding edge, even if I have to try a few builds before I find one that’s stable enough for my primitive workflow. Honestly these changes seem like they might shift CAD from being a chore to being a bit fun. The UI / workflow in 0.21 seems a bit needlessly tedious to me, and 0.22 added a bunch of new features that would clearly help that for how I use it.
@@BobWidlefish Excellent, let the fun begin!
Great new features, thanks to all responsible for their selfless efforts..
I agree, the devs have really excelled on this release.
This helped me solve the "Body object error is not allowed", that I got when using the cut function. I am definitely subscribing, thank you!
Glad it helped!
Hi - when making the horizontal lines equal on the little square my sketch turns orange. What am I doing wrong? I want to thank videos the best and easy to follow along with you, I have tried other videos that I was lost in the first 5 minutes with you videos i actually feel that I can learn this at 68 years old. Thank you! Bob
Thanks! That normally means it's over constrained. Do you have the auto delete redundant constraints checked?
@@Adventuresincreation Thanks for replying... Where would I check to see if the auto delete to see if it is checked?
@@bobkarstien1248 In the sketcher task pane.
@@Adventuresincreation II want to thank you for all your help! I am using version 21.2 I retried this lesson 3 times and I am getting different results then you on somethings I did not think there would be that much difference between the versions. Should I see if I can find the version you are using and remove 21.2 version? Thank you!
@@bobkarstien1248 No, don't remove that version, let me know what you are having trouble with and I will make a video to show you if there are differences in 0.21
Does this work on a round surface ?
Do you mean a curved rather than flat surface?
Hi At 16H43 there is a step to create simmetrical lines around the center point. My whole drawing turns orange, and I can not find my conflicting constraints. I have tried all of the following: 1. Zoom in on the object or point that's turning orange. Sometimes, constraints can be hidden or overlap, making them hard to spot. 2. Use the "Constraint list" filter: In the Constraint list, click on the filter icon (looks like a funnel) and select "Show only conflicting constraints". This will hide all non-conflicting constraints, making it easier to spot the problematic one. 3. *Check for *hidden constraints: Some constraints might be hidden from view. To show all constraints, including hidden ones, go to the "View" menu, then select "Show hidden objects" (or press Ctrl + Shift + H). 4. *Try *recomputing the constraints: Sometimes, FreeCAD can get stuck. Try recomputing the constraints by going to the "Model" tab, clicking on the "Recompute" button (looks like a circular arrow), and then selecting "Recompute all". But still can not find the conflicting Constraint. Can you please assist?
good job mate
Thanks!
Like others in this comment section, I have been beaten by FreeCAD many times. As a (possibly) ADD 63 year old my attention span is shorter than I'd like. So, imagine my gratitude when I came upon your excellent explanations in this series. It all, at least the basics, makes sense, now. Many, many thanks for your patience and ability to simplify a relatively complex yet fundamental aspect of this program.
I am glad it helped. You are still relatively young and able to learn lots of new things. Keep on learning.
Reasons I have not bought a 3D printer yet 1) I must be able to design my own parts 2) "...if you are printing something that will take 24 hrs and it crashes after 15 hrs..." 3) the cost were so expensive for the size you are limited with These companies have the latest equipment, materials, etc. You helped me with learning FreeCAD. I need content for what (allowances) I need design with for things that will be inserted or slide or ? Thanks! G_Dub
I will definitely produce some content that show that. It definitely depends on the manufacturing process, with laser or cnc router you are definitely looking at different tolerances to 3D printing.
Thank you, Yes I feel more confident with CNC metals and allowance for expansion/contraction whereas all the different types of plastics available for just a single "what you going to use it for" and how do you keep up? Now being able to ask suppliers questions is a must along with asking your supplier for 3D printing... I really enjoy your teaching methology!
@@GDub1958 Yeah, it's definitely something you have to pay attention to. For the most part, I 3D print PLA.
Leget what ive been searching for for days now
Hope it helped.
@Adventuresincreation It did i just cant seem to figure out how to do this to the base plate i already made. Im designing a supercharger outlet manifold.
@@codycottingham130 Do you have any pictures of what you are trying to do?
Hi, can you please explain why you always start a new sketch from the origin instead of sketching directly on a selected face? For example, when you built the tower off the base, you started from the XY plane and added the initial 10mm thick base to your 80mm tall tower, rather than sketching and building from the face 80mm up. Similarly, when creating a datum plane, you added a formula to position it exactly where needed, instead of simply selecting the face at a 35-degree angle and creating the datum plane there. I'm just learning and I'm curious if there's a beneficial reason for doing it the way you've shown, or if there has been an update allowing a simpler method since this video is 3 years old. Thank you!
Great question! - In prior versions of FreeCAD it suffered from something called the Topological Naming Problem. Essentially, the labels for faces would change if you modified the model and added new faces hence any attached sketch would move to where then label moved with unpredicable results. You can read more about it here wiki.freecad.org/Topological_naming_problem. The very latest dev release of FreeCAD has addressed this problem and for the most part resolved it so now, creating sketches from faces is an OK thing to do.
How do I make a ring with an engraving?
No you mean a ring that goes on your finger? If so, you would project the text onto the ring shape.
nice tuto this spreeadsheet thing is awesome thx
Glad you like it! I use it all the time.
Multiple solids in a body! 🎉
Yeah, and as many as you like 👍
why is it important? what does this feature improve?
@@LeandroSehnemHeck This allows you create things that may need multiple solids and some stage in the modeling process. I just used it for a parametric Gridfinity base
@@LeandroSehnemHeck Work flow is simplified & improved, don't need to switch between Part and Part Design workbenches as in the past.
Excellent, I have been putting off designing too complex things, this unlocks the floodgates!
I agree
This is very interesting for printing metal parts and even machining metal parts. I have an FDM plastic printer at home but some parts need to be in metal. Here is a fantastic opportunity. Thanks for the info !
That's what I thought too!
Are you teaching to use a website?
No, I am showing how I used a service. It's a way to get your stuff made if you can't make it yourself.
Thank You .. Cheers :)
You are very welcome!
Interesting. Can you go the other way? That is, do a traditional three view drawing and create a 3D model from that?
Unfortunately no, you do create models from the sketcher which is similar to TechDraw but constrains sketches with geometry and dimension.
It's not very as intuitive as A2Plus. It's very simple but broken mostly. So there is no scope except for these chores in order to create constraint driven assembly in Assembly3 WB or Assembly4 WB. Because beginner may find the whole day where do I add or insert part directly without opening 10s of 100s of parts.
I agree and the new assembly workbench is no more intuitive sadly.
Thank you for the informative video! Could you also cover 2D modelling in FreeCAD?
What do you mean by 2D modeling?
Your videos are amazing. Thanks in advance. Could you please make a quick video about creating gcode for imported step file. Freecad indicates error regarding set origin and does not creates gcode. I designed a piece in fusion360 exported as a step file format then imported to freecad only received set origin error
We can do that, can you share your step file?
The end points and rim points curve, how do you curve it precisely? I’m trying to model a Reflex Sight, the amount the side curves stick out from the width of the sight is 10cm, so each curve would need to be a total of 5cm, but it seems that the radius is calculated based of off the curve, and then it’s centre point which is pulled way back and most of the time out of the sketch, I also can’t do a measurement constraint from the curve to the main box my curves come out from, which means I can’t take that space into consideration for manually measuring and adjusting the curve, I know it’s probably really simple, but I just can’t seem to figure it out, and can’t find any videos specifically on precise curves.
Can you share your sketch so I can better visualize what you are trying to do
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I just downloaded, but now it is Revision 37709. Having some issues others might need to look out for, when I started the first sketch the window to select the plane was partially obscured in the lower left of the screen. At first I did not realize what was happening and once I figured out to drag the window up it subsequently pops up in view. Also the XY,XZ,YZ plane geometrical views remain on after starting the sketch, haven't figured out how to turn them off yet. Otherwise everything is working as you demonstrated. Best Regards
Thanks for the heads up, I have updated to the very latest and thought I would create another video that shows how to set up the layout.
@@Adventuresincreation Figured it out, selected the Origin in the Model pane, hit the space bar and toggled off the Planes view. Must have been a solar flare when I first started the program!
@@DanAz617 Great!
@@Adventuresincreation Yes, that would be fine. Thanks in advance.
Unfortunately TNP fix broke Assembly 4 and the developer of that workbench is upset about his work being demolish somewhat. It remains to be seen if someone will come up with a file converter from A4 to Assembly WB in V1. Perhaps you could look into this subject?
That's the first I ha e heard about that. I have tried the new assembly workbench it is definitely a work in progress.
@@Adventuresincreation even if the new assembly workbench gets to a useable level, it will not help those who have been building complex assemblies in A4 for last few years… I have waited for TNP fix for a long time but now it looks like I am stuck with v0.19 since all my assemblies are in done in A4.
@@rok1475 Good point, it is important for legacy.
Can`t find path workbench. Instead I find CAM workbench. But if I choose CAM workbench, no icons appear, which are usually in path workbench
They changed the name in the latest dev version the workbench is now called cam but mine looks the same and works the same as it did when it was the path workbench

I’m struggling so bad trying to get to grips with freecad. I’m absolutely certain it’s me, as I struggle with any sort of technology. Would you consider designing something like this for my son’s ashes, and how much would you charge if so? Kind regards.
Do you just want a box like that or something more ornate?
@@Adventuresincreation I was hoping to create a box similar to this, but with scrip engraved onto it, and maybe a few refining touches.
@@christophercroft9824 I can send you the file if that helps
The dimension updates are very similar to what I use at work, Solid Edge. Definitely a step in the right direction from an deficiency standpoint. I found a bug recently. Where should I report that? I can certainly send an example to you if you're interested.
You can report the bug on the main page of freecad.org select contribute>report a bug
Why no build for Windows 7 !!!!!!
If you are using Windows 7 you may want to give Linux a try.
@@Adventuresincreation Hah, not a solution. I have specific needs which preclude any kernel change.
@@noanyobiseniss7462 Then I think you would have to compile it yourself for that platform.
Really good tutorial but I have a bit of a problem. My combo box does not have the "Edit Controls" widget. Is there a way to turn it on?
If you look in the "windows" menu, I think you can select it there.
I'm old and love the larger icons, bit late but hay..
I must admit, I dislike the tiny mouse pointer and icons.
Sweet! You explain as you go!
I try to. It definitely makes it easier to follow.
Thanks for for the update! A couple of years ago i put in the following issue on the Freecad forum: "From what I can tell there is no way to click on a vertex and see what constraints exist on it(I assume that is because it is not "real" piece of geometry since it is a point). If you click on the 2 lines that form the coincident constraint you get ALL the other irrelevant constraints associated with those lines " As a casual user I frequently have to go back and rethink which pieces of geometry are best constrained to each other and not being able easily revisit and edit them was a deal killer. Wonder if they have fixed that?
I am not sure if that is included, might be worth a look.
You left out the most important new feature of sketcher. You can specify dimensions while drawing.
That's a good one too!
You missed auto symmetry or the new midpoint. It's a bit tricky with out remove redundant constraints.
@@TheMegaturk I have another video coming with a bunch of these features.
SHA256sum checks that the download of the installer file was not corrupted during downloading. Trusting FreeCAD as a source has nothing to do with that.
You are correct, thanks for pointing it out.
A heads up: Apparently BIM is native to 0.22. If you have BIM installed (as I did in Windows) you will get a warning to uninstall it and then be unable to uninstall even in 0.21 because the directory had been renamed. This may affect other Workbenches but I don't know for sure. I had to: Exit FreeCad 0.22 and rename <USER>\AppData\Roaming\FreeCAD\Mod\BIM021 directory back to [...\BIM]. I was then able to uninstall BIM in 0.21 so I could avoid the error message in 0.22. It didn't seem to harm the functionality of the dev version either way. Thanks for the video. Lots of new features for me to explore.
Thanks for the heads up!
Worth a download to have a play.
Definitely
